3D scanning cart
The purpose of the machine is to perform regular 3D scans of plants in a greenhouse. These scans are conducted using two F600 scanners that are arranged in a fixed setup with dual scan mode. The machine operates on a predetermined schedule, following a fixed sequence through the greenhouse, scanning a total of six rows, each containing 60 plants.
Previously, daily scans were carried out manually using a cart capable of holding 240 plants. This process was not only labor-intensive but also time-consuming, requiring significant human effort to ensure accuracy and consistency in the scans. The manual method posed challenges such as variability in scan quality and the potential for human error, which could affect the reliability of the data collected.
To address these challenges, SMO developed an autonomous cart equipped with a scanning system that automates the scanning process. This innovative solution significantly reduces the time and labor required for plant scanning. The machine is programmed to operate based on a user-defined schedule, allowing it to perform 3D scans efficiently.
The automated machine can complete the scanning of the designated rows in approximately three hours. Once a scan of a plant is finished, the data is automatically uploaded to a server for further analysis and research. This streamlined process not only enhances the efficiency of data collection but also ensures that researchers have access to high-quality, consistent data for their studies.
Benefits of the Automated Scanning System:
- Time Savings: By automating the scanning process, the machine significantly reduces the time required to collect data, allowing researchers to focus on analysis and interpretation.
- Consistency and Accuracy: The fixed setup of the dual scanners ensures that each scan is performed under the same conditions, leading to more reliable and consistent data.
- Scalability: The system can easily be adjusted to accommodate different greenhouse layouts or the number of plants, making it a flexible solution for various research needs.
- Enhanced Research Capabilities: With data readily available on the server, researchers can quickly access and analyze the information, facilitating more effective decision-making and research outcomes.
The development of this autonomous scanning cart represents a significant advancement in the field of plant research. By automating the 3D scanning process, WIWAM has not only improved efficiency but also enhanced the quality of data collected, paving the way for more in-depth studies and insights into plant growth and health in greenhouse environments.
This mobile solution can be equipped with any camera system and can be applied both in a greenhouse or a controlled environment. The system can work safely, even with people present. Installation requirements are minimal and no structural elements are mounted on the floor in the between the rows of plants.
